What is the nature of a university? What is the role of religion in the life of the university? What is a Catholic university? In A Catholic University, Msgr. Terrence J. Murphy addresses these fundamental questions by taking an in-depth look at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul/Minneapolis, where he serves as chancellor. He identifies what makes a university a Catholic university and demonstrates how Catholicism can be an integral driving force of the university.

Murphy shows how religious values and commitment to the community, under entrepreneurial leadership, play out in specific academic programs and how they can change and give new energy and outreach to the university and its community. He emphasizes the importance of religious commitment within a university's mission.

Religion as it influences the education of young people can build better people and communities. Religion as related to the marketplace, if taken seriously, can energize a university to greater service to the community and can become an agent for good in the marketplace and the public square.

A Catholic University also addresses societal concerns by sketching out how this one university has tried to be a responsive and constructive citizen. Its experience is of value to educators, to parents of college students, to supporters and friends of education, and to informed citizens.

Chapters in Section I: Catholic Higher Education for a Fuller Life are "Education, Religion, Leadership," “St. Thomas—The Little College That Could,” “What is Catholic About a Catholic University?” “Catholicism in Relation to Other Studies,” “A Catholic University Reaches Out,” and “Service to the Catholic Community.” Chapters in Section II: Leadership are “The Context of Decision Making,” “Presidents Make a Difference,” “Leadership and Core Values,” “Many Lead, One Governs,” “A Developing Administration,” and “Institutional Culture and Communication.” Chapters in Section III: Critical Decisions are “A Study in Decision Making,” “Why Business Administration?” “A New Campus is Born,” “What Has Technology to do With the Humanities?” and “Religion in the Mission of a University.”

Terrence J. Murphy is the chancellor of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He served as American delegate to the Vatican for the congress that wrote The Nature of a Catholic University.

"This fine book reflects a long experience, a real sense of creativity, and a new way of understanding the role of Catholic Universities today. As a former President of IFCU, I traveled with Msgr. Murphy in many countries; I witnessed the growth and emergence of his University in new fields. He has always been able to find a central place in the dialogue between today's society and Religion. Msgr. Murphy has become one of the top leaders in Catholic Universities in the U.S.A."
-Hervé Carrier, S.J.
"This book is a tribute to many forces in higher education in America today. The first is private education at its best, transmitting its religious and professional values to society as a whole. Then there is the leadership given by lay people who both understand and appreciate the values needed in their own industrial and civic developments. None of this will happen without moral leadership of the highest order tied to religious and human values which are needed in our society and, of course, the will to take entrepreneurial chances as the whole endeavor moves forward. This is a fine case study that will reward careful reading. I recommend it highly."
-Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C.
"Monsignor Terrence Murphy's book . . . is an honest, genuinely introspective story not just of the University of St. Thomas, his school, but of how a dream can become a reality.

"Msgr. Murphy treats of many things: commitment to religion, in this case Catholic religion and its theology, devotion to the liberal arts, and a theme not generally found in this kind of work, entrepreneurial leadership. He also deals in a respectful but bold way with risk-taking. There are many other themes in the book, and when you finish it, you feel you have had an almost unique look at educational leadership that may have had some hard days but which really worked and does work.

"He also writes about the roles of Trustees of Governing Boards, administrators, faculty, students, alumni, and at length about the community and their respective roles in developing and making a dream come true.

"The book is a realistic but loving history of a school that grew in a quarter of a century from a good but small college into an exciting, comprehensive university which has become a major player in a metropolitan area of almost 3 million people.

"The author cannot say this but I can. It is also a story of Monsignor Terrence Murphy, a remarkable leader, a visionary, a person of faith, of commitment to the playing out to that faith in education and a God-given skill to attract others to walk with him on the pilgrimage."

-Archbishop John R. Roach
"A main strength of the volume is the rich experience and deep personal commitment of the author. Msgr. Murphy knows what he writes about regarding vision—he has had it, regarding perseverance—he has demonstrated it, and regarding the satisfying fruition—because he has known it. Murphy's treatment of leadership—its indispensability and its nature is excellent. Every public or private university president (or aspirant to a presidency) can benefit from Murphy's analysis and observations. . . . The volume is very useful in its treatment of the evolution of St. Thomas' curriculum, professional programs, and community relationships in response to social, political, and economic stimuli. Students of higher education will find sagacious treatment of tactical and strategic factors in change making. [This] is a valuable story of a Catholic college journey to breadth, largeness, and University stature while preserving—indeed enhancing—its special qualities as a 'faith community.' It is a story told effectively by Msgr. Murphy who has brought enormous insight to a new generation of college community members—if only they will seize it."
-John W. Ryan, President Emeritus, Indiana University
