As impressive for its generous spirit and its breadth of vision as it is for its sound scholarship, this series presents a theologicalsystem in the Catholic tradition that is superbly organized and clearly articulated. The system as a whole is geared especially toseminarians, pastoral ministers and priests, graduate students, and scholars. At the same time, the individual installments offerinternally coherent treatments of the various aspects of the Christian understanding of humanity's encounter with God;consequently, they may be read independent of each other.
The projected three-volume series appears in eight installments: Volume One, Volume Two/1, Volume Two/2, Volume Two/3, and Volume Two/4A are available. Volume Two/4B, Two/5 and Volume Three will follow.
"Both Roman Catholics and Protestants will be stimulated by this challenging work."--Pro Ecclesia
"What we have in God Encountered is a carefully organized and well-written fundamental theology coming from acommitted witness and capable interpreter of the Great Tradition."--America
"The author unpacks the subtitle in clear and complex ways. . . . Essential for all theological libraries."--ReligiousStudies Review
"I am always alert for theological writings that articulate and promote a catholicity of both scope and attitude, intellectualexpansiveness wed to generosity of spirit. In this regard the achievement of Frans Jozef van Beeck is simply outstanding. . . . Ihave found reading the available volumes a singularly bracing experience. Van Beeck's writing combines intellectual rigor andaesthetic elegance. It offers abundant challenge, but also ample delight. In many ways he is the Rubens of contemporarytheology: working on a vast canvas, his work exhibits superb organization, but often arrests with vivid detail."--RobertP. Imbelli, Commonweal
"Combining an exceptional command of the Catholic tradition with ecumenical openness, [van Beeck] deftly avoids theextremes of integralism and modernism. His book provides the kind of critical balance that is to be sought in a work of thiskind."--Avery Dulles
